A study area in a traditional style @ Free Birds Open Shelter Home for Girls
30 May 2021

A STUDY AREA was constructed for the girls of Free Birds Open Shelter Home. The plan was to convert an unused space into a study area in the style of a traditional ‘Tharavad’ with an open verandah & a hall inside so that the girls can study here in a positive ambience.

> Since the construction is in the style of a traditional ‘Tharavad’, the roofing was done with clay tiles to ensure that traditional feel.

> Benches & desks were constructed inside the room so that the kids can conveniently study here. Beneath the desks we have also arranged permanent shelves so that the kids can keep their school bags here.

> The plastering of walls was done in such a way that the walls have an old-fashioned look & feel.

> The electrical work was completed and there will be a total of 10 tube lights, 5 fans and also 4 fancy lights. There are also provisions for keeping a computer & projector.

> The carpentry work of the windows & door was also completed. One traditional door was purchased and 6 windows and a ventilator were also fixed.

> Granite tiles were paved over the benches & charupadi. We have paved the floor with terracotta tiles so as to give it an antique look.

> During the construction work of the study area, we had to rearrange the wash area for the convenience of kids. It was done by moving the wash area adjacent to the study area.

> There was a well in the courtyard in front of study area and we reshaped it for the convenience of the kids.

> The concrete work was done in the courtyard of the study area to ensure that the area remain neat & clean, as kids will be spending majority of their time here.

> The painting work of the study area was completed in 3 weeks. We did some special paintings to make this area child friendly so that it motivates kids to remain focused on their dreams.

The construction work started in August 2020 and it took 10 months to complete the ‘Vayanapura’, the study area for the girls of Free Birds Open Shelter home, in the form of a traditional Tharavdu. The spacious smart room, with facilities for keeping books & bags, can be used for around 50 girls. There is an android TV with cable & broadband connections and hence the kids can access online classes from June 1st onwards without any hassles. The entire project was executed with the support of Rajesh & Mumtaz from Abu Dhabi in the name of their children Abner & Adhrit.

The project cost was close to 11.5 lakhs and we will soon be arranging a library here with contribution from another supporter which will make the ‘Vayanappura’, a mighty project worth Rs.12 lakhs. This is the biggest project Arm of Joy has ever executed till date. Because of the lockdown scenario, ‘Vayanappura’ block was opened to the kids on 30th May 2021 without any formal function.
