Setting up a sick room @ Free Birds Open Shelter Home for Boys
08 November 2020

A SICK ROOM was set up for the boys of Free Birds Open Shelter Home. Whenever the kids are down with some illness there was no option to isolate them from other kids. They had to remain in the common bedroom, which is on the first floor.

The plan is to set up a sick room in the ground floor itself with an attached bathroom and this will ensure that when a kid falls sick, he can remain in the ground floor itself where he will get all the attention of the staff and more importantly that particular kid can be isolated from other kids, when the disease is of a contagious nature.

> First we had removed a wall to arrange a small pantry area and bathroom attached to this room. The cost of the cement, gravel & sand for setting up this additional space is met with the amount shared on the occasion of the 6th birthday of Goutham from Chicago, two months ago in August.

> The labour charge for this entire work is done with the contribution from Deep from Bangalore, who also celebrated his birthday in August.

> The tiling work was completed in the bathroom & the small pantry area attached to the room. The cost of the materials such as wall & floor tiles, cement, sand, gum etc and the labour charges have been met with the amount shared for the joy of Sidhu & Sachu from Bangalore.

> We had also manufactured three metal cots of size 2.5 ft x 6 ft for this room so as to make it a convenient space for the kids to take rest when they fall sick. These are being arranged as per the wish of Diana & Sonu from Melbourne, when they became proud mom & dad of the little angel Raelynn. The mason work & tiling work of the ward and the 3 cots here were all arranged with their contribution.

> The roofing of the additional space attached to the isolation room, for setting up a small pantry area & bathroom, was done with Trafford sheets. The cost of the sheets and the industrial work for fixing the framework for roofing is done for the joy of Amitha from Doha.

> We were trying to make the walls of the isolation room as child friendly as possible. Positive tips to stay healthy were engraved on the wall tiles so as to motivate kids, when they are not keeping well. This was done to share the joy of Nasha Baba from Dubai, on the occasion of her birthday.

> The cost of wires, switch boards, LED lights etc & the labour charges for electrical work was done for the joy of Archana from Kochi.

> The bathroom door, ventilator & sliding glass for the window in the small pantry area and bathroom, were done for the joy of Kavitha from Bangalore.

> The false ceiling in the small pantry area and bathroom, was done with panels of wooden pattern. This was made possible with the amount shared by Amitha from Doha.

> The wash basin, closet, shower, tap & all other plumbing materials have been bought for the joy of Afsal from Abu Dhabi.

> The labour charges for the entire plumbing work were met with the amount shared by Zainab from Dubai.

> Vapouriser, First Aid kit, Medicine box and two stools were purchased for the joy of Gangadharan from Kozhikode, on the occasion of his birthday.

> The painting of the walls, windows & doors was done to make the room as much child friendly as possible with a pleasant ambience. This was for the joy of Sreeraj from Mumbai.

> The curtains for the ward were done and the paint for the attached bathroom & additional section were bought for the joy of Varsha from New Delhi.

> The beds for the cots were purchased for the joy of Sundar from Chennai.

It took 2 months to complete the work of setting up a special room where kids can remain isolated when they fall sick. The section named ‘Wellness Ward’ was inaugurated on 8th November 2020 by Adv. Babitha Balraj, member of Child Rights Commission.

We arranged 3 cots in this ward, where we have also constructed an attached bathroom and an additional space where kids can have food and also use vapourizer. The total project cost Rs.2.35 lakhs and with this we have ensured that other kids won’t get infected when somebody falls ill. Also we have tried our best to make sure that the kids who are in isolation here enjoy an extremely pleasant ambience.

The whole project was completed with the contributions from 13 people from various places all over the world, who voluntarily contributed on special occasions in their life simply to share their joy.
