Anandavanam, the park of joy at Leprosy home, Chevayur, was constructed in loving memory of Pokasarakath Abdullah who passed away in March 2019. It was the wish of his family to do something for a philanthropic institution which will remain as an everlasting memory. The DD Home is an old age home for disabled at Chevayur, who were cured from leprosy but abandoned by relatives. There is one interesting thing about this home which makes it extremely secular & so unique. A mosque is there in their compound & a temple nearby which were constructed long ago for ensuring that the inmates who cant walk properly because of the disability, need not go out of their compound to offer prayers. And there is an utilized space near the mosque & temple which we targetted to convert into a beautiful park.
As we are frequent visitors here in the last few years & having the opportunity to interact with the inmates of DD Home quite often, we understand that there is no proper space there for them to relax & gather together for recreation. So we cleaned up this plot and then we set up some benches and a stage there for them to gather on special occasions. We also arranged a fence and a small garden so that it will become a perfect place for them to relax. We believe that this park will turn out to be a superb space for psychological refreshment for the poor people there. The entire project was done in the memory of Sri. Abdulla from Kozhikode who passed away in March 2019. His family contacted us with a wish to set up something for the benefit of underprivileged which will remain as an ever lasting memory. When we proposed this project, they were quite happy to allocate the fund for the same.
A beautiful sketch of the stage & benches was shared by the architect Ms. Lakshmi Manohar and the work started. After 26 days of mason work, electrical & plumbing work, tiling and painting, spending more than 1.5 lakhs, the beautiful park of joy finally got innaugurated in 22nd April 2019 which happened to be the Earth day. Mrs. Zareena Abdullah inaugurated the park at 4pm in memory of her husband. And the family members planted saplings in this plot to ensure that Anandavanam will be the most relaxing & nature friendly spot forever, for the disabled & poor people in this home. The innauguration event was a memorable & emotional one. We also had some entertainment programmes on stage for the delight of the inmates. The inmates of Poor Home (the old age home at Westhill which is under the same management) also participated in the function & they all had a wonderful time at Anandavanam.
While inaugurating the Aanandavanam at Leprosy Home, Smt. Zareena Abdullah had asked us to do gardening also in the plot. A beautiful sketch of planting plan was shared by Ms. Amritha P.K., a landscape architect and we are just completing the gardening work today. The park which we had constructed in the memory of Pokasarakath Abdullah, has now become much more beautiful & thanks to his family for ensuring that Anandavanam will be a lush green spot for the inmates of leprosy home to relax & feel good.
After the gardening work was completed, the park was handed over to inmates on 4th May 2019. A musical evening was also organized today in the evening to celebrate the completion of the project. Sri. Vijayan Mannoth, a melodious singer & retired civil engineer from All India Radio, entertained the inmates with some old songs.
