Constructing a Badminton Court @ Free Birds Open Shelter Home for Boys
02 January 2020

A BADMINTON COURT was constructed for the boys of Free Birds Open Shelter Home. The work started in the middle of December and we were targeting to finish the work by the end of this month so as to make it an awesome new year gift for those energetic kids of Free Birds.

Adjacent to the Badminton court, we also constructed a gallery type seating arrangement, so that the kids can sit here and watch others play. This will also help to organise tournaments among kids and we are sure it will have a huge psychological impact on them.

> The gravel, cement, sand etc for preparing this court were purchased for the joy of Amy & Appu from Kozhikode.

> The solid bricks for constructing this seating arrangement have been purchased for the joy of Fincy from Sharjah.

> The cost of tiles & cement for the gallery type seating arrangement was met for the joy of Adithi mol from Kozhikode on the occasion of her birthday.

> The entire expenditure for concreting the floor of the Badminton court was met for the joy of Amitha from Doha.

> The top layer of the shuttle court was done with cement grout mixed with red oxide & the cost for the same was met with the amount shared by Mythilee Garjare from Dubai.

> The labour charges for the tiling work of the seating arrangement adjacent to the shuttle court was done for the joy of Rineesh Kumar from Kozhikode.

> Labour charges for the foundation work of the court & walling of gallery adjacent to the court were met with the amount shared by Rajesh from Abu Dhabi.

> Plastering work of the gallery which includes application of black oxide on it so as to make it neat & beautiful, was done for the joy of Varsha from New Delhi.

> Labour charges of plastering the court which includes the lining work and the Painting charges of gallery & court were done with the amount raised by the kids of Start Right school last academic year, by organizing a fair as part of their value education. The badminton net, rackets & a set of shuttle corks were also purchased with the money raised by them.

> A badminton competition was also organized on the inauguration day among the kids of Free Birds. They all were categorized into juniors & seniors and doubles competition was organized in the evening. Colorful jerseys were given away as prizes for all the finalists in both categories. These prizes were sponsored by Devi from California & the amount shared by her was also utilized for meeting the transportation cost & other miscellaneous expenditure during the execution phase of the project. A grand dinner from Paragon was also arranged for the kids on the inauguration day as per the wish of Devi.

‘Smash Zone’ was inaugurated on 2nd January 2020 by the beloved district collector of Kozhikode, Sri. Sambasiva Rao in an extremely informal way. The collector came to Free Birds in a casual wear & played with kids for sometime thereby inaugurating the court. He offered us all support from the side of the District Administration for organizing badminton competition among children who need care & protection.
